THE HISTORY OF PUMA SUEDE TRAINERS FOR MEN

EARLY DAYS

Over its history, it has been the sneaker of choice for basketball players, hip-hop artists, and skateboarders. Find out why the PUMA Suede men’s shoe is still going strong after 50 years. Back in the middle of the 20th century, trainers were only worn for exercise. Most people hadn’t come around to the idea that a sports shoe could cross over into casual wear. But by the 1960s, brands like PUMA realized that there was a gap in the market for what they called a “lifestyle” shoe – durable, comfortable footwear you could wear anywhere. That’s when they came up with the PUMA Suede concept.

EPITOME OF COOL

The PUMA Suede shoes were originally released ahead of the 1968 Olympic Games under the name “Crack” (an American slang term for an athlete at the top of their game). In the 1970s, “Crack” became “Clyde” after PUMA Suede shoes were adopted by NBA star Walt “Clyde” Frazier, who loved to wear them on the court. A few years later, they were the height of fashion among 1980s hip-hop stars and then 1990s skateboarders. An icon of streetwear was born.

AN ICON 50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

50 years after their launch, PUMA Suede classic men’s shoes still have a devoted following. In addition to their cult status, trainers in the PUMA Suede line are comfortable and long-lasting, and the paneled upper means that they lend themselves to a wide array of colorways and styles.
