WELCOME TO THE ADIDAS SUPERSTAR APPRECIATION CLUB

Timeless, versatile and instantly recognizable. The adidas Superstar hasn’t changed much in 40 years of production, and it probably won’t change much in the next 40 either. It’s a winner. An OG winner. The signature shell toe and three stripes are huge in basketball culture, hip hop culture, fashion culture, the skate scene, the pop scene and of course, among sneakerheads. At Foot Locker, we pay respects to these iconic kicks with our selection of the best models around today. Before we get there though, let’s shoot back to see how the adidas Superstar became the superstar it is.

ADIDAS SUPERSTAR TRAINERS: THE JOURNEY TO THE TOP

The adidas Superstar actually started out as a basketball shoe, and a revolutionary one too. Converse had dominated the basketball market since the early 1900s with their classic canvas All Star design. The Superstar was a leather model, which had better stability, was 30% lighter and had the now-iconic shell toe to slow down wear-and-tear in the forefoot area. It was worn by the Boston Celtics in the 1968 NBA finals and soon after 85% of NBA players switched over to adidas, including 6-time champion Kareem Abdul Jabbar. When other brands released more advanced court shoes in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, adidas Superstar trainers became a phenomenon in the growing hip-hop culture, helped by constant endorsement from supergroup Run DMC. In the early noughties, major pro skaters started donning the Superstar on the half pipe, which made it huge amongst skaters for whom the shell toe was ideal for withstanding the constant grip tape scraping. The superstar has been reinterpreted countless times in the last 40 years, with endless collaborations with artists and designers. A true icon, not just of the court or the street, but of icons everywhere.

YOUR ADIDAS SUPERSTAR SELECTION

The Superstar is instantly recognizable – probably more so than any other adidas shoes or clothes. The classic white upper with black stripes is still as fresh now as it was in ’68, but it’s also been released in almost every colorway imaginable since that – that goes for women’s adidas superstar trainers, men’s and kids’ too. Here, you will of course find the classic adidas Superstar with the white upper with black stripes, but you will also find it inverted to a black upper with white stripes, or in tonal white and tonal black versions too, which are perfect for smart casual dress codes. For a deviation from the classic, you can get the classic white upper but with stripes in blues, yellows, pinks, golds, creams and greens. You can go even more off-piste and get a different colored upper altogether. Then, there are also special designs from the latest collabs with artists and designers, and there are the classic three-striped tracksuits and other clothes so you can rock it head to toe.
